About the Item
This is an absolutely stunning antique Coral Cameo Pendant depicting the God Bacchus dating to the Victorian to Edwardian period. The Coral Cameo of Bacchus is a very deep exquisite hand carved cameo with masterful carving of the head of the God with grapes in his hair depicting his role as the god of wine. The color of the coral is magnificent. The hair and face of Bacchus are truly extraordinary. The coral cameo is set in a beautiful 10 Karat Yellow Gold engraved repousse frame. The gold has an 18-22 Karat Gold wash over the 10 Karat Gold. The pendant has a pin stem to be worn as a brooch if desired.
The bale is articulated so can be folded down when worn as a brooch.
Dionysus or Bacchus is the God of wine, vegetation, fertility, festivity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre.
The jewel is inscribed on the reverse "Christmas 1911 Marie Graves"
The artistry and craftsmanship of this Coral Cameo masterpiece are of the highest quality. The scrolling open work gold frame with its engraved details and stunning warm color contrasts beautifully with the magnificent coral cameo.
The pendant is 1 1/2 inches (39mm) long including the bales. Without the bale it is 1 1/4 inches (33mm) tall. The pendant is is 1 1/8 inches (28mm) wide.
The cameo is 11mm deep.
The pendant is 10 Karat Gold with an 18-22 Karat Gold wash as was the custom of the period.
The pendant is engraved on the reverse: "Christmas 1911 Marie Graves"
