About the Item

This pendant is a characteristic jewel of the Belle Époque: its fineness and precision and craftsmanship, as well as the assorted, precious materials are typical of this time which placed beauty above all else. In the centre of this spectacular drop-shaped design, a large blue Ceylon sapphire of approx. 4.40 ct is set in platinum. Its near-oval antique cut is slightly asymmetrical, following the drop shape of the pendant itself. The sapphire is completely natural and shows a beautiful transparency. Its quality and natural origin are furthermore verified by a renowned gemological institute, the certificate of which comes with the piece. Blue sapphires such as this one are lucky finds and guarantees of stable value, seeing as the market is flooded with synthetic sapphires or such that have been heat-treated or filled to improve them. Natural ones such as this, however, are exceedingly rare. Overall 39 diamonds in historic cuts, each of them unique and faceted by hand, cover the surface of the piece in gleaming light reflexes and furthermore intensify the blue of the sapphire by contrast. The entire surface appears purely white, seeing as a layer of platinum has been overlaid onto the actual golden body of the pendant. This technique is typical of the time, seeing as platinum was very hard to work with and far more expensive than gold. Thus, the desired white effect was achieved by combining both precious metals. We have added a modern platinum chain to the pendant as a free gift to make it wearable at once. A beautiful piece dating to the years around 1910, with more than a century of history and yet in wonderful condition.
