Black Coral Gold Necklace And Japanese Shakudo Pendant
About the Item
Shakudo was introduced to Western civilization during the middle of the 19th century. During that time, Shakudo was thought to be unknown outside Asia. However, modern researchers suggest that decorative alloy metals similar to Shakudo were in use in ancient Rome, Greece, and Egypt.
Shakudo is a Japanese alloy used in sheet metal inlay or wire inlay. The technique involves inlaying gold, silver, and copper into a darkened copper base and originally found its application in Japanese armor and swords. Craftsmen would occasionally extract Shakudo plaques from the armor, integrating them into jewelry or artistic creations. This practice has evolved into a highly sought-after and distinctly rare form of artistry and collectibles. It has become very collectible and quite unusual. An exquisite Shakudo pendant from the Victorian (ca1880) era with a necklace from genuine black coral with 14K gold! This is a beautiful and very unusual piece. The pendant has a traditional mixed metals Shakudo image, which includes a tree, sun, and bats. The pendant is double-sided, with a complimentary image on the opposite side.
The total necklace measures 36". The coral necklace measures 32", and the pendant measures 4" long, 0.8" at its widest point, and 1/2" thick.
The size of the black coral beads varies from 6 mm to 8 mm. The coral beads are of excellent quality. Authentic, natural color. No thermal or other treatments were used. There is a Japanese hieroglyph stamp on the pendant.
The necklace is fastened with a 14K solid gold clasp.
Black coral beads connect small beads of 14K solid gold (white and yellow) 2 mm in size.
This piece is truly exquisite and holds a special allure, making it a splendid addition to any collector's treasure trove!
