This DUBINI coin necklace from the 'Empires' collection features an authentic rare gold koban coin minted circa 1860-1867 set in 18K yellow and white gold with rose cut diamonds.
DEPICTED ON THE COIN
Edo Period. Man-En Koban (1860-1867)
Obverse: Floral motifs in Paulonia (Kiri) in the shape of a fan above scrolls with the value, name and signature; lines etched across the fields.
Reverse: Four official hallmarks.
HISTORY
The Japanese koban coin, particularly the MAN-EN Koban, holds a rich historical significance dating back to the Edo period (17th to 19th centuries) in Japan. Koban coins were first introduced in 1601 during the reign of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. These oval-shaped gold coins were minted to stabilise the country’s monetary system and facilitate trade. The MAN-EN Koban, specifically, was issued during the Man’en era (1860-1861) and featured unique artistic designs on its surface. They were widely used in commerce and symbolised the wealth and stability of Japan during this pivotal era of its history. Today, the MAN-EN Koban is not only a valuable numismatic artefact but also a cultural representation of Japan’s prosperous past.
