About the Item
This is a magnificent antique Austro-Hungarian Garnet and Pearl Pendant Necklace with a Garnet set chain in a flower and leaf motif. It is in the Renaissance Revival style in Silver Gilt and dates to circa 1870. Recognizable by its bold use of bright stones and ornate metalwork Austro-Hungarian jewelry is always a fascinating treat for the eyes and, in this case, for your neckline. The captivating and fanciful focal piece centers on a large faceted deep wine-red garnet. Scrolls, leaves, and yet more garnets complete the alluring assemblage, which connects to a complementary chain of garnets, each glimmering in equally enchanting settings. For a finishing detail--and a bit of motion--a teardrop-shaped garnet drop dances below.
The rare pendant necklace has three articulated sections. The central section is constructed in a multi-layer design with a gorgeous central flat cut faceted Garnet. The center is surrounded by six oval faceted garnets with radiating seed pearls and round garnets at the ends. The top and bottom pendant sections are further set with round garnets and flower motif designs. The pendant hangs from a chain set throughout with round Garnets in flower motif settings.
The natural faceted Garnets are of the most beautiful color. The pendant is further adorned with pearls. The pearls are elegant silvery white pearls. The garnets are all set in raised collets creating the characteristic three dimensional design of the Austro-Hungarian and Renaissance Revival jewels. The overall effect of the Garnet and Pearl gems in the pendant and the chain with the flower and leaf designs in this early antique necklace is truly magical.
The pendant portion is 2 7/8 inches (7cm) long, and 1 3/8 inches (3.5cm) wide.
The central garnet is 10mm wide.
The necklace chain is 15 inches long.
The necklace is Silver Gilt which is silver with a gold wash and is typical of the Austro-Hungarian jewels.
