THIS IS A STUNNING MUSEUM QUALITY FRENCH BEAUX ARTS RENAISSANCE REVIVAL 18 KARAT GOLD PENDANT OR BROOCH OF A GRIFFIN OR DRAGON HOLDING A STUNNING ANTIQUE GREEN DEMANTOID GARNET IN THE MOUTH. This is a beautiful Beaux Arts - Art Nouveau - Belle Epoque pendant/brooch in the Renaissance Revival style and dates to circa 1860-1900. It depicts a wonderful griffin or dragon with the head of a lion and a fish or mermaid tail in a stunning deep repousse design in gorgeous 18 Karat Yellow Gold. The jewel is French. It is particularly rare with the extraordinary demantoid green garnet in the mouth. The jewel is a wonderful oval faceted natural mined gem with spectacular green color and with the wonderful striated fire that characterizes the demantoid garnet gems. The face of the griffin dragon is extraordinary with magnificent gold work. The wings are absolutely gorgeous with finely detailed feathers. The tail and body of the griffin have fabulous engraved scales and are adorned with beautiful acanthus leaves. Green Demantoid Garnets from the Belle Epoque period are extremely rare and were only mined in a small area in the Ural Mountains of Russia. Their color and fire are unequaled and they are highly collectible. The jewel has two loops through which you may put your chain to wear as a pendant and also has its original c-clasp pin. The pendant is a wonderful large size and has substantial weight. The gold workmanship on the dragon is very fine with great detail. I love the three dimensional element of the jewel. The overall effect of the detailed gold work, the griffin motif and the rare demantoid green garnet in this early antique piece is truly magical. The pendant is 18 Karat gold. The pendant/brooch is 1 1/2 inches (4 cm) tall and is 1 3/8 inches (3.5cm) wide. The pendant weighs 9.8 grams. The listing is only for the pendant. The chain is only for display.
