MHJ Biwa Pearl Necklace of Ask Suzy, Aileen Melhe
About the Item
A one of a kind large statement necklace of Biwa pearls and sterling silver from the estate of Aileen Mehl known as Suzy. Aileen wrote the column "Ask Suzy" and was an American society columnist for many papers for over 50 years. The necklace is a hand made one of a kind piece by jewelry artist Mary Holman Johnson of MHJ Studio. The pearls are a known as Biwa, named after the fresh water lake Biwa in Japan. Each pearl is unique and measures approximately .75 to 1.25 inches in length. The shorter ones are toward the back by the toggle clasp with the longer ones in the front. There are two strands of Biwa pearls with occasional 3.7 mm ribbed sterling silver beads added to each strand. The front of the necklace has three sterling beads connecting the two strands of pearls. From these beads is suspended a large pendant of a 1.25 inch wide and 2.5 inch long oval abalone shell set in a sterling silver mount. The bottom back of the abalone pendant is stamped 925 for sterling silver. The two stands of pearls of the necklace are attached inside the the sterling silver spiral design cone pieces on the ends. One end has a ring and the other has a bar for the toggle clasp and all in sterling silver. The necklace is 18.25 inches long laid out flat. The drop is between 3 and 4 inches depending on how the pearls fall.
