About the Item

About the Ancient Coin The obverse side of the coin depicts Severus Alexander, the last Roman emperor of the Severan dynasty, who ruled from 222 to 235 AD. During times of peace, he brought great prosperity but was eventually assassinated following attempts to bring peace between the Roman Empire and Germanic tribes, leaving many within his military ranks feeling disaffected. The reverse side of the coin depicts Mars, the Roman god of war and guardian of agriculture, holding a shield and spear. The son of gods Jupiter and Juno, he was the most revered military god in the Roman pantheon. Unlike his Greek counterpart, Ares, who was reviled in Greek literature as a destructive and destabilising force of evil, Mars was depicted as a bringer of unity and stability. The coin itself dates to 222-235 AD and is set in a custom-designed contemporary 9 carat gold pendant made from completely recycled gold and gems. Two salvaged lapis lazuli is set just below the bail on either side. Approximate Size The length of the pendant is 43 millimetres (including the bail), and the width is 24 millimetres.
