About the Item
Ornate Baroque period museum quality gold cross with cabochon carnelian rondels on each of the arms and an engraved floral center depicting a stylized rose.
17th Century
The Rose is a symbol of Rosicrucianism, a spiritual and cultural movement believed to have been founded by the legendary Christian Rosenkreuz. It was influential on numerous societies including the Freemasons, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and its successor AMORC. The Golden Dawn counted among its members Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, W.B Yates, Arthur Machen, Aleister Crowley and Anna de Bremont.
Of Latin shape with outwardly widening ends, each arm elaborately decorated with scrolled foliate motifs. The circular center with a stylized Maltese shape cross centered by a rose. The back of the cross is a near mirror image of the front sans carnelian cabochon gemstones.
Condition: Very good, gemstones are intact, attractive age appropriate wear, later bale, small area of restoration near bale.
