About the Item

Bar pins, which hit the scene in the 1890's, were an item in pretty much every lady's jewelry box up until the 1950s. Nowadays, most of us don't wear bar pins, and a lot of us don't wear pins or brooches, period. Result? A gazillion bar pins going begging. We've ended up with quite a pile of them over the years. Some of them are boring and get melted for scrap. But many of them are beautiful and show incredible workmanship; when possible, Eytan likes to convert these to other types of jewelry, as he did here. This bar pin boasts superb craftsmanship and sleek symmetrical, streamlined styling but it looks entirely modern and entirely sexy as a long, straight pendant. The entire pendant is 14 karat gold. The fancy wire scroll work in the center is yellow gold and the rest of the pendant is white gold. Note that the white gold has not been plated ("dipped") in rhodium, so it shows its true white gold color, which we rarely see nowadays because pretty much all white gold jewelry is rhodium-dipped to attain the white-white color we all associate with white gold. This pendant probably was dipped, originally, but rhodium wears off, especially after 100+/- years. We like the metal tone the way it is, so we opted not to redip it. The bezel-set square sapphires, about 0.13 carats each, are carre cut and probably synthetic (which would have been typical for the time). The center prong-set diamond is about 0.06 carats with an early brilliant cut. Eytan added the bale at the top of the pin -- it's large enough that you can remove the chain for mixing and matching, but we really like the steel round omega chain because it has the perfect "machined" look that typified a lot of moderne jewelry. Ours is silky soft, strong, and has a 14k yellow gold closure, which nicely references the yellow gold in the pendant. If you prefer the pendant without the chain, just let us know and we'll give you an adjusted price. The original pin hardware was stamped "WAB," which was the mark for a New Jersey manufacturer called Wordley, Allsopp & Bliss, founded 1909. The firm changed partners a lot but kept the WAB mark up until the 1940s, when it changed its name to Allsopp-Steller. We think the pin dates somewhere between 1920 and 1935. Chain details: The chain is new, made in Germany and 16" long. It's 1.5mm thick and has a 14K gold lobster closure. Pendant measurements: 2.5" long by 0.2" wide (2mm thick) Weight: The pendant (without the chain) weighs 4.1 grams. The chain weighs 6.5 grams.
