About the Item
Sterling silver squash blossom set by noted Navajo silversmith Violet Nez. The 2 ½” x 3’ Naja with 57 matched Sleeping Beauty turquoise stones is on a 26” sterling necklace with 12 squash blossoms. Each blossom has 11 turquoise stones. Each ¾” x 1 ¾” dangle earring has 15 turquoise stones.
Violet Nez learned the art of silversmithing by watching her father, Leo G. Harvey. He said to her "If you want to learn, you have to observe, I cannot teach you step-by-step. Use your God-given tools—your mind, eyes, hands, ears, heart and K’e."
The Sleeping Beauty mine is located near Globe, Arizona. Its turquoise is noted for its solid, light blue colour with little or no matrix. Sleeping Beauty turquoise is the favourite of the Zuni Pueblo silversmiths for use in petit point, needlepoint, and inlay jewelry. This mine is one of the largest in North America and was still operating until August 2012.
