Mid-19th Century Snuff Box with Napoleon Bonaparte Medallion
About the Item
Gold box or snuffbox in chased gold with leaf foliage patterns and floral friezes. The hinged lid is decorated with a Rogat medallion representing the profile of Napoleon Bonaparte: "The return of the mortuary ashes of Napoleon 1st" made in 1840. Emile Rogat (1799-1852), pupil of David d'Angers is famous for his medals-portraits of Charles X but also of Napoleon Bonaparte at the time of the return of the ashes. Inside the cover a dedication has been engraved: "To Mr. Brewsterr, Souvenir Napoleon Louis Buonaparte Fort de Ham October 24, 1842". M.Brewsterr dentist moved to Paris from 1833 and became from 1839 dentist of the European courts. This snuff-box is probably a gift made by Louis Napoléon Bonaparte, then locked up at the Fort de Ham after his coup in Boulogne for services rendered.
