Antique Gorham Sterling Silver Postal Scale #15340

About the Item

Antique sterling silver postal scale by Gorham, circa 1904. This antique postal scale features a repousse floral pattern domed scale on a wooden base with a small rectangular platform also adorned in a repousse pattern, screw calibrator. Shipping options on the scale include "papers," "books," "mdse," "letters," with "cents" underneath. Scale is not functioning. Measures approx 3 1/2" high, 3 1/4" diameter base. The platform measures approx 1 13/16" x 1 9/16" Weighs approx 236.5g, 152.1dwt total. Marked lion anchor G STERLING B 2569 PATENETED 1904 Very nice condition with some scratches and tarnish, the wood base is chipped on the underside of the scale.     This silver and antique coral letter opener was handmade by our talented goldsmiths, who used a coral branch from Sciacca, the Sicilian town famous for its corals. The Sciacca Coral has unique origins in the world: it is closely tied to the exceptional history of the Ferdinandea Island, which is a submerged volcanic island in the Strait of Sicily, between Pantelleria and Sciacca. As of today the summit of the Ferdinandea Island remains between about 6 and 8 meters below the Mediterranean Sea level. Its most recent appearance as an island was in July 1831. In the late 1831, in a shoal (called later ”Bummolo” by the fishermen of Sciacca) located around 30 miles from Sciacca, a new island emerged in a fiery hell from the depths of the Strait of Sicily.
