Antique George III Topaz and Gold Shoe Buckles, circa 1790

About the Item

A pair of George III topaz and gold shoe buckles, set with cushion cut foil backed topaz, with cut down settings forming the outer, curved, rectangular frame, with a flat inner edge and closed back. The fittings have two row tongues with double hoop joining bars. Tested as approximately 9ct gold, circa 1790. Provenance The Peter and Pat Crofts Collection Crofts antique dealers, located at 117 Elm High Road, Wisbech, was owned and run by Peter and Patricia Croft, from 1950, for 51 years. After being educated at Wisbech Grammar School, Peter Crofts had volunteered to serve in the Fleet Air Army and subsequently went to the US to train as a pilot. When, aged 20, Crofts was training as a pilot in Texas in 1945, the engine of his Corsair F4U had burst into flames leaving him seriously injured. Both his legs were amputated and he had spent three and a half years recovering in hospital. It was under the guidance of the Stamford dealer Major Bernard Edinburgh that he became an antiques dealer and by 1958 was elected a member of the British Antique Dealers Association. With thanks to Wisbeach Standard.

An antique Belle Époque diamond buckle design brooch, with old-cut diamonds, with an estimated total weight of 13.65ct, with an Edwardian-cut diamond in the centre, weighing approximately 1.60ct, in a millegrain edged rub over setting, with a flower cluster, with leaves set either side, with single rub over set diamonds above and below, with three, diamond set swags, top and bottom, hanging from the frame edge, with single diamonds set at each point, in rub over settings, with a flower cluster in the two central swags, with a diamond set curved rectangular surround, millegrain edged, with grain set diamond trefoils in each corner, mounted in silver-upon gold, circa 1890. The back frame unscrews. The diamond set front is then flexible and can be adapted to wear as a belt buckle or choker plaque. Either end of the pin is marked with an A'M maker's mark, for Abraham Metzker, Austria 1867-1922. In our opinion the diamond colour range is I to J and our opinion the clarity is VS2.
