About the Item

Antique Georgian 18th century religious reliquary locket in yellow gold, Portuguese. With Christian motifs in relief and chiseled decoration, depicting the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and a Rosary at the back. This Baroque jewel of rocaille design is composed of two halves designed with shell, floral and scrolled motifs in repoussé and chiseled goldwork; the front half is embellished with an openwork frame with scrolled motifs and articulated on a circular hoop bail, with the back half detaching from the main body by removing the bottom fleur-de-lis screw. A reliquary is an early locket created with the purpose of holding a religious relic. These often took the form of a pendant, so that the relic could be worn and proudly displayed at all times. These pendants were richly decorated with images and symbols of the saints whose relics were encased within. The iconography of this present artwork shows the dogma of the Catholic Church which states that the Madonna was free of original sin from the moment of her conception. The Baroque period in art history spans from about 1600 to 1775 and is one of the most versatily amongst the art eras. The name is derived from the Portuguese jewelry term “barroco” or “barroca”, meaning “irregularly formed pearl”. It was preceded by the Renaissance and succeeded by the Neoclassicism style. Tested as gold, not marked. This precious object is in overall excellent very good condition for its age. It might show some patina, dents and bent parts consistent with its age.
