About the Item
Antique Russian icon, late eighteenth-early nineteenth century, depicting the thirteen major celebrations of the year in the Russian Orthodox Church. At the center is the Resurrection of Christ, the great Christian celebration of Easter or Pascha. The twelve surrounding feasts are of important events in the life of Christ:
The Nativity of the Virgin
The Elevation of the Holy Cross
The Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple
Nativity of Christ (Christmas)
Baptism of Christ
Presentation of Christ in the Temple
The Annunciation
Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter
Ascension of Christ

Finely painted images with detailed, expressive faces, good craquelures. Appropriate expansion of the wood in the back, expertly secured at the top side. Desirable aged finish, minor restoration. Traditionally, a candle is lit in front of the icon which produces a wonderful surface patina. Most of the Cyrillic inscriptions intact.
