Beautiful Antique Loving Cherubs Gold Metal Pocket Watch Holder or Porte Montre
About the Item
Beautifully handcrafted antique display stand or porte montre from which to hang a pocket watch features an ornate, baroque scrolling motif antique gold finish metal frame with a pair of loving cherubs on top and a burgundy velvet circular cushion back with one hook. Would make a wonderful gift for a pocket watch collector! The pocket watch hooks from the center hook, with the circular velvet padding behind. The velvet is loosely attached and shows some wear which is to be expected due to age. Decorative easel back stand is stationary and is attached to the back. Please note pocket watch in photos is not included. It is just being used to show you what a pocket watch would look like hanging on the hook.
Measures approximately 6” high x 4.5” wide x 2.75” deep. Will hold a small to medium sized pocket watch. Pictured pocket watch is approximately 2.18" tall x 1.73" wide and is for display purposes only and is not included.
Weighs approximately 8.47 ounces.
During the 19th Century, people used pocket watch holders, often referred to as "watch hutches", to store their pocket watches overnight to protect them from loss or damage. These watch holders converted any pocket watch into a small table clock. They also made perfect bedside clocks, before alarm clocks were invented.
The French called them porte montre, meaning “watch stands.” Parisian artisans fashioned ornate watch holders for wealthy travelers visiting Paris on the Grand Tour. Pocket watches were a necessity during this era and fine shops along the Palais Royal specialized in selling unusual and whimsical pocket watch accessories.
