Created around 1880.
Lily flowers are often used as a heraldic symbol. It symbolizes purity and innocence, and the light blue color of the natural Sapphires adds to this aura of delicate beauty and elegance.
This highly collectible Victorian jewel is composed by an old-cut Diamond-set and two trembling Sapphires. They move slightly with the motion of the head as if alive! Mounted in silver-on-gold which is mounted onto a two-leg hair comb displaying the coveted mottled brown and tan color, a rare and fine item. Please note that the tip of the comb leg is dented, as this part is always hidden in the hair it does not spoil the overall fine condition of the aigrette. The hole comb part can be unscrewed for comfortable storage. On the back side of the aigrette, there is a small compartment that was probably used to insert fresh flowers.
The term “aigrette” comes from the Latin word for heron. Elegant and beautiful bird with immaculate posture. This type of jewelry was most popular during the late Victorian epoch 1880-1890 es and then again in the 1920es.
