C1650 Medieval Silver Signet Ring Of Pelican in Her Piety and Religious Symbols
Located in Baltimore, MD
This rare silver ring dates from the 1600's and likely originates from Western Europe. The ring is cast in one piece, the intaglio is framed within a chased octagonal border and the band displays flared and chamfered edges at the shoulders, all features typical of the period. The Pelican in Her Piety Medieval signet ring features strong cross cultural references with the engraving of the pelican and the navigation symbols of the moon and stars. Sixteenth and seventeenth century portraits show signet rings worn on the forefinger or thumb, to more easily press the ring to the wax with a simple turn of the hand. Albeit their practical function, with the use of precious metals they were also signs of status. The Pelican in her piety refers to the medieval fable of the pelican drawing blood from her breast to feed her chicks. The pelican is thus a symbol of the blood of Christ in communion, a sacrifice needed for the redemption of mankind. The crescent moon and star...

Contemporary Diamond Festoon Collar Necklace
Located in New York, NY
The defining flourish of a festoon necklace is the drama of its swag, opulently undulating and accenting the collarbones in radiant sparkle. Festooning has been used since ancient times, with the most recent celebratory example adorning the city of London at the Coronation of King Charles. In classical Greek and Roman architecture, the festoon was a garland of ribbons, flowers, fruit, or foliage draped between two supports, used as decoration and, at times, the symbol of saintliness, glory, or victory. These garlands were also worn on the body--on the head or around the neck to signify honor or celebration, and this tradition was carried forward to the Classical period, the Renaissance, and through to Victorian England, especially as a recurrent motif in paintings and sculpture. The festoon is also a type of necklace that contains several drapes or swags of gemstones, chains, and other sculptural elements as the critical elements of the design. The style became popular during the Georgian period (1714–1830s), carrying over into the Victorian era (1837–1901), and has been revived with many sparkling all-diamond...
