Gemstone: Rock Crystal
Artifact Mogul Estate Rock Crystal Ram Head Amulet and Garnet Beads Necklace
Located in Chesterland, OH
Unique, one-of-a-kind, antique necklace, Amulet necklace. The Mughal (or Mogul) Empire ruled most of India and Pakistan in the 16th and 18th centuries. It consolidated Islam in South Asia and spread Muslim (and particularly Persian) arts and culture as well as the faith. Rare 18th C. Mogul Indian Rock Crystal Ram Head. This amulet was probably made for a necklace worn by one of the Kushite kings. Representations show these pharaohs wearing a ram's head amulet tied around the neck on a thick cord, the ends of which fall forward over the shoulders. Sometimes, a smaller ram's head is attached to each end. Rams were associated with the god Amun, particularly in Nubia, where he was especially revered. The ram's head is carved from smooth rock crystal. The carved quality is very high. Dimensions: 41.5mm long and 25mm wide. The ram head amulet is a symbol of perseverance, vitality, and sexual energy. The ram personifies generative power, creative energy and is also a spirit that protects its owner. The length of the necklace is 32 inches (81 cm). The size of the vintage rice garnet beads is approx 6.5 - 7.5 mm, the size of the tiny round garnet beads is approx 2.5 mm. The size of the matte rock crystal beads is 16mm. The necklace is fastened with an old silver clasp. The weight of the necklace is 100 grams. The garnet necklace was most likely made later, around the end of the 19th century. This is evidenced by the clasp, the silk thread, and the way the garnet beads were cut, carved, and drilled by hand. As we wrote above, the head of a ram made of rock crystal is from the 17th-18th centuries. Unique, one-of-a-kind, antique amulet...

Georgian Diamond & Green Foiled Rock Crystal Ring
Located in Danvers, MA
Crafted of gold testing around 18K, with silver collets holding the diamonds, the ring features a rectangular table cut rock crystal backed by green foil to the center, flanked by super chunky rose cut diamonds. In wonderful condition, this ring dates to the late 1700's to the early 1800's. While the rock crystal shows some surface wear (mostly seen under magnification), the green foil still has wonderful glow that changes as you move the ring to different angles in the light. Measuring approximately 6.2 x 5.5 mm, the crystal is still held securely in its gold bezel. The foil also shows wear when viewed with magnification, but much of it remains and shows beautifully. The rayed ring "butt" is in very good condition. The two old rose cut diamonds create lovely contrast with their pretty sparkle. Very chunky with a high dome, they measure approximately 4.6 x 3.2 and 4.6 x 3.5 mm, respectively, including their silver settings. They remain in very good condition with no damage; I see a few tiny inclusions in one diamond with magnification, otherwise they are very clean. There is a little warmth to their color due to their closed back (likely foiled) settings. The silver collets show a little expected wear, but also remain in good condition for their age. Dainty and elegant on the hand, the face of the ring measures approximately 14.8 x 5.5 mm, with an approximate 4.34 mm rise off the finger. Tapering very slightly, the band measures approximately 2.4 mm at the shoulders and approximately 1.51 mm at the very back and is a bit oval in shape. There are no hallmarks, which is to be expected. On my scale the ring weighs 1.97 grams. Smaller on a mandrel due to its shape, the ring fits me like a size 5.25, though might fit you a little differently depending upon the shape of your finger/knuckles. It could be sized up or down within reason by a skilled jeweler with experience in antique jewelry. Please note that foiled jewelry...

Antique Amuletic DozenRockCrystals CagedRing MedievalStyle GiltBronze Pendant
Located in Chicago, IL
This antique amuletic bronze framed pendant cages a dozen 7mm-diameter single-cut rock crystals that each feature a table-cut decagon crown, deep pavilion, 21 facets and uncut girdle, while the culets range from off-center to blunted. They are tightly set within four linked rings to overlap at the same angle in a sparkling single row. Seeming to retain a little of its original yellow-gold gilding on just the interior, the frame that surrounds each of the four sections of three crystals enables them to reflect pale-yellow-and-lime light when the pendant is viewed from certain angles. Suggesting French heritage, the Medieval Frankish culture in northern France made jewelry in similar segmented or openwork shapes of wheels or whorls, which were worn as gem-decorated disk-shaped brooches or gold-caged rock...

Antique Baroque Italian Glass Rosette Ring
Located in Chicago, IL
ITALIAN GLASS DECORATIVE RING Italy, 17th century Gold and foiled glass Weight: 4.4 g; circumference 57.6 mm; size: US 8.25, UK Q Gold sexfoil bezel set with six diamond-shaped and table cut glass stones over foil. Each petal is interspersed with a round rock crystal bead, with a seventh in the center. The back of the bezel is sculpted to emphasize the floral shape of the ring. A fine D-ring hoop terminates in fluted shoulder molded to the underside of the second and fourth petals. The foils have oxidized to green on each petal with the exception of the fourth petal where the foil now appears a rust color. The ring is in very good condition. The attention paid to gems over the goldsmith’s settings prevailed in the first half of the seventeenth-century. Examples of this new fashion in jewelry are evident in items from the Cheapside Hoard and in design books from across Baroque Europe. Often, as with the present ring, the gems were highlighted by their rosette style settings. Literature An almost identical setting for a hat ornament was found in the Cheapside Hoard (Museum of London A14082; see Princely Magnificence, Victoria and Albert Museum 1981, p. 25 and Forsyth, London, 2013). These rosette designs may have been inspired by Merovingian jewelry (see for example a fibula conserved in Saint-Omer; Le Nord de la France de Théodose à Charles Martel...

Antique Silver Spanish Cross Pendant with Rock Crystals
Located in Chicago, IL
Cross Pendant with Rock Crystals Spain or Portugal, late 17th - early 18th century Silver, gold, rock crystal Weight 9.1 gr.; Dimensions 56.3 × 38.8 mm. An elaborate and elegant cross pendant made of silver with rock crystals in closed settings. The center consists of a larger round gemstone surrounded by five irregular-shaped stones forming the cross. The openwork arms have a triangular shape and are formed of facetted rock-crystals in foliate settings. The obverse side of the cross consists of a layer of gold. An extension with two stones and an angular shaped frame is hooked into the pendant loop, probably to be worn on a velvet band. The pendant is in good, wearable condition. After the Reformation, cross pendants were worn mainly in Catholic countries by men, women, and children. During the seventeenth century, the designs became ever more intricate, and the crosses were often embellished with gemstones, such as rock crystals in this example. These were sourced along the Alpine regions of France, Switzerland, Austria, and Southern Germany. The stones gave the appearance of diamonds. The foliate settings are characteristic of late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century jewelry made in Spain...

Antique Double-Sided Octagonal Pendant with Verre Églomisé
Located in Chicago, IL
PENDANT WITH THE CRUCIFIXION AND ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST Italy (Lombardy), c. 1550–80 Silver rock crystal, gold foil, verre églomisé Weight 23.7 grams; dimensions 47 × 32 × 10 mm Double-sided octagonal pendant with two verre églomisé plaques made of rock crystal with beveled edges, backed with gold foil and engraved and painted from the reverse. The obverse with a Crucifixion scene with the Virgin Mary and John the Evangelist, the reverse with John the Baptist kneeling in a landscape and holding a staff. Both framed in gold borders with a red and gold dotted frieze. The plaques are held in a silver frame with pendant loop and engraved foliate settings. On each side of this pendant, an individual octagonal stone has been faceted and beveled to make an integral frame for a picture that is painted on its reverse. The technique of verre églomisé, deployed here in a full range of colors, is used to virtuoso effect. The “frame” is created with gold leaf. But first (in reverse painting) an inner border was articulated in red and green pigment. Within this “frame” on each side of this jewel is a tiny illusionistic scene painted with great delicacy (with, again, each color and detail laid down in reverse order). In the final result, the sense of looking into a deep space is amplified by the recessive colors of the landscape in contrast to the frame which sparkles and changes tone depending on the angle at which the light strikes the object. The effect can only be called scintillating. The two subjects presented on the pendant are the Crucifixion and John the Baptist. The portrait of John in particular can be compared to the depiction of the same saint on a pendant in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In both pendants, the rock crystal is faceted and a fictive frame as well as the scene are painted in verre églomisé. The New York jewel has what is thought to be a Spanish setting, as opposed to the Italian origin of this piece’s setting. The strong similarities in the reverse-painted crystals speak to the international commonalities in high-quality jewels made for courts, although it is also possible that ready-painted rock crystal octagons were traded internationally. Unlike the John in the New York pendant, who stands holding a tiny lamb on a book, this John actively proclaims his prophecy of Christ...
