Antique 18kt yellow gold men's band ring in the shape of a pair of coiled snakes, featuring their tongues sticking out. The tops of their heads are set with two old-cut diamonds.
Made in the United Kingdom, London, 1916
Hallmarked with London town mark and the date letter, maker's mark.
Maker: Bravingtons Ltd.
Snake motifs are one of the earliest historical and culturally diverse mythological symbols.
The story of snake jewels began in the classical era. Gold snake rings and bracelets were worn by the ancient Greeks.
Since snakes shed their skin they are seen as symbols of power, seduction, and everlasting love as well as death, rebirth, transformation, immortality healing, and fertility. Particularly the Victorian era brought snake jewellery into the limelight after Prince Albert proposed to Queen Victoria with a ring in the shape of a snake. The Queen pronounced the snake to be a figure of eternal love, and has been treasured since then, and used in jewellery.
