About the Item

The English have been crafting beautiful five stone ruby rings in gold since the beginning of time, or just about. But not for men. Sure, men could wear some of these rings but they are often more ornamental than most men would like. Nonetheless, I am ever the optimist so I never stopped searching. And waiting. And searching. And waiting. And one ordinary Tuesday my life improved immeasurably because this spectacular and spectacularly *rare* ring came into my orbit. Created in 1999 in Sheffield, England, this elusive and beautiful handmade 18K white gold ring features a quintuple of certified natural and completely untreated no-heat rubies from Burma that weigh in total approximately 2.2 carats. 95% of all rubies extracted from the earth undergo heat-treatment to improve their color. An unheated ruby with the color and clarity each of these five stones possesses is a rare gem indeed. Rubies are prized the world over and have been throughout recorded history; Burmese rubies are considered to be the finest and most valuable rubies on earth. However, some Burmese rubies (and rubies from other locations) can appear dark or almost black when you look at them face-on. This is called "extinction" and it's not a pretty sight. Each of the precious rubies gypsy-set in this band ring is "open," meaning they are bright and lively, full of color and life. The largest ruby measures approximately 4.4 mm x 4 mm and the smallest 4.0 mm x 3.1 mm. The gems are cushion cut and have been graded as "transparent" which makes these stones all the more rare; rubies are a type II gemstone, meaning they typically have inclusions. But these stones are beautifully clean, displaying only the signature inclusions one would hope and expect to see in a natural ruby from Burma (Myanmar). And look at how they're set: each with its own little porthole, shaped perfectly to fit the individual ruby. This is just one of the best men's rings I've ever owned. Rare, understated but spectacular, sturdy and built to last several lifetimes of daily wear. This could be a ring you wear on your right hand as your signature ring. Search far and wide for a proper English five stone ruby ring made expressly for a man with unheated and untreated Burmese rubies in the most perfect color and you will not find it because I own it.
