About the Item
A Victorian 9 karat yellow gold snake ring.
This charming ring, is excellently modelled and features a pair of snaked coiled around the finger of the wearer.
With makers marks 'JS' and Assay marks for Birmingham dated 1859
Width 13mm
The ring is a UK size X, USA size 11 3/4. Due to the nature of its design this piece cannot be resized.
Whilst the use of the snake motif in jewellery has been around since the Ancient Greek civilisation, it really came into its own during the Victorian era.
It was Queen Victoria herself who bought snake jewellery to the forefront when she was presented with a snake engagement ring set with her birthstone an emerald by her husband-to-be, Prince Albert.
The Victorians associated the snake motif with eternal love.
Condition - Overall the condition of the ring is very good, with some abrasions to the surface of the gold in keeping with its general age
