Edwardian Natural Color Changing Sapphire Diamond Ring with French Hallmarks

About the Item

A rare and exquisite gemstone ring from the Edwardian (ca1910) era! Crafted in 18kt gold and platinum, this handmade piece features a faceted sapphire at the center of an old Mine Cut diamond border. The oval cut sapphire, which is prong set in yellow gold, weighs approximately 0.85ct and has no indications of heat treatment. What makes the natural sapphire stone so extraordinary is its remarkable color changing properties. The specific shade of the sapphire changes noticeably when viewed under varying forms of light. In daylight, the color has a lovely blue color common to most sapphires. However, when viewed under fluorescent light, the color changes dramatically to a strong shade of purple that closely resembles an amethyst. This gives an almost magical quality to the stone, which is breathtaking in either shade! The sparkling Mine Cut diamonds that encompass the vibrant center are set within platinum and provide the perfect compliment to the colorful gemstone. Completing the design are two additional diamonds which rest on either shoulder, blending seamlessly into the wide knife edge style band, which tapers towards the back. Collectively, the diamonds have an overall total approximate weight of 1.00ctw. There are two visible French hallmarks stamped along the outside, including an owl (indicating its import into France, but meeting minimum 18kt gold French standards) and a mask (representing the use of platinum, either French or imported origin). Although difficult to capture the array of color hues that the sapphire exhibits, we have tried our best to show the deep blue and rich purple shades which can be found on either end of its color spectrum in our images. An outstanding piece, the ring would look stunning worn on special occasions, or could make an exceptional gemstone engagement ring! The ring has a finger size of 7 but could be easily resized. The sapphire and diamond cluster centerpiece measures slightly less than 5/8" tall, a little less than 1/2" wide, and rests approximately 1/4" above the finger when worn.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the platinum and gold setting and the sapphire and Mine Cut diamonds are intact and securely set.
