1950s Dome Rings

From Connecticut estate: a swirl of bright, clean white diamonds and jungle-green Colombian emeralds, all set within a rich 18k yellow gold setting makes for a most distinctive and glamorous ring. In both the design and the quality of stones and workmanship, this reminds me of a David Webb piece, could it not? Alas, there is no maker's mark so we must assume the ring to be the work of a likewise talented jeweler with excellent taste and a flair for the dramatic. The midcentury ring has an organic, architectural form and if the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan were to add-on to their main structure a gift shop, I could imagine the structure looking identical to this ring. It also looks like a snail, if snails were made of nearly flawless diamonds and emeralds. The composition is: three swirling rows of full-cut diamonds —all very fine quality— a twisted rope of gold, three rows of rich, saturated emeralds, a second twisted rope of gold and a final swirl of three rows of diamonds. All told we have approximately 2.5 carats of diamonds and over 1.5 carats of emeralds. The stones are individually bead-set and are thus recessed and protected, which accounts for their fine condition after sixty or so years. This is an impressively beautiful ring. The mounting itself is solid and heavy; not a corner was cut in the construction of this jewel. And as I mentioned, the diamonds and the emeralds are of very high quality. What I did not mention and what I think is pretty great (and unusual for a dome ring) is that you can wear the finest Merino wool sweater...
