About the Item

Nowadays, engagement rings are almost synonymous with diamond solitaire rings. It wasn't always this way: The first recorded diamond engagement ring was only exchanged in 1477, given to Mary of Burgundy by the Arch Duke Maximilian of Austria. Yet this was no solitaire ring, and it should take until 1866, when Louis Comfort Tiffany designed one such ring, that the modern diamond solitaire ring was born. By the 1930s, solitaire rings had grown to be the most popular of engagement rings – bearing the promise of eternity, due to the diamond's hardness, as well as carrying the message of their recipient being 'the one'. The ring at hand dates to this time. It presents a large diamond of 1.45 ct in beautiful colour and clarity, raised upon an intricately pierced gallery that lets as much light as possible offset the diamond's brilliancy and fire. The diamond is cut in a transitional cut between the old European cut and our modern brilliant, cut by hand and thus a true one-of-a-kind gemstone. An independent certificate proves its size, colour and clarity ratings. Two smaller baguette-cut diamonds are set upon the gallery and lead to the shank of yellow gold. The ring is in excellent condition and makes for a beautiful and unique variant of the classic solitaire ring. Timeless and angular in the Art Déco style when viewed from above, it presents a wealth of intricate nostalgic detail when viewed from the side. We discovered this piece in London, and it is also British in origin.
