About the Item

As purveyors of fine antique and vintage jewellery, we sometimes even buy loose gemstones for their excellent cuts. The beauty of antique diamonds, besides being more sustainable, is in their individuality and artisanal cuts. At a time when the raw diamond was scrupulously inspected by the gemcutter to determine which cut would do it justice, and when each facet was cut by hand, the resulting diamonds were all individual. Nowadays, most diamonds are cut in an automated process – they are being scanned by computers which then calculate the ideal cut in order to arrive at the same formulated product. The diamond at hand is a beautiful example of a hand-cut antique diamond. It shows the so-called old European cut, the predecessor to our modern brilliant cut, and still shows the subtle cushion shape that marked its own predecessor, the old mine cut. It shows only very slight inclusions (vsi) that are not visible to the naked eye. We paired it with a contemporary white gold ring setting by a US-American manufactory whose style and quality we found suitable for this fine antique diamond. The setting with its fine millegrain decor evokes the style of the Edwardian era, whilst being modern enough for daily wear. The diamond itself came to us from the city of Hamburg, Germany. A true one of a kind piece, and a perfect engagement ring for those with a taste for the individual and artisanal. This ring is accompanied by an independent certificate by a renowned gemological institute.
