Pear Shaped 2.73 Carat Aquamarine & Diamond Ring by Black Star & Gorham, c1950

About the Item

A Pear Shaped 2.73 Carat Aquamarine and Diamond Ring by Black Star & Gorham. Set in Platinum c1950. The history of Black Star & Gorham. Marquand & Barton, were founded in 1810 in New York's Maiden Lane by Erastus Barton and Frederick Marquand. The firm added partners and in 1823 it became Marquand & Co. In 1851 the company was one of the few American retailers admitted to participate in the London Great Exhibition and in the same year the name was changed to Ball, Black & Co and became the leading jewelry retailer in the country. In 1874 the firm was renamed Black Starr & Frost and merged with Gorham Corp. and the company was renamed Black, Starr & Frost-Gorham. In 1940, Black, Starr & Frost became Black Star and Gorham and the name remained unchanged until 1962. While the pear shape looks up-to-date, this shape dates to the mid-15thc in Flanders. The number of facets has remained the same since the 16th c. It has never been able to be improved. This 2.73 carat pear shaped aquamarine exhibits perfect symmetry, cut and color. It has the same sparkle of a blue diamond of the same size and shape. The Aquamarine is flanked by 2 tapered baguettes each weighing approximately .35 carats. The use of Iridium and Platinum was restored after WWII because its use was restricted during the war. The combination of 10% Iridium and Platinum made for a very durable metal, especially when used in rings. This is the perfect engagement, cocktail or just a ring you can wear everyday.
