Rare 1960s Gilbert Albert Signed 18 Karat Gold 10 Carat Chrysoprase Berry Motif Ring, Fully Signed & Serial Numbered Chrysoprase Stone Dimensions: Approximately 10 carat (Length 12mm - Width 17mm- Depth 7mm) Ring size 5.25 Catalog Note Gilbert Albert is one of the most famously and iconic jewelry designers who between 1958 to 1988, won the “DeBeers Diamonds International Awards” an unprecedented ten times, three for Patek Philippe, two for Omega and five times under his own name. He is known for receiving this award more than any other jewelry designer for his superb pieces in semi-precious stones in spectacular naturalistic settings. His work has been widely exhibited across the world from Paris and New York to Dubai and Johannesburg and he was the first living artist to be invited to show his pieces at the Kremlin in Moscow since 1917. To him, “jewelry is a reflection of the lady wearing it” and as every woman is different.” His style is so unique and identifiable, Albert is often in conversation with other visionary designers such as Rene Lalique and Salvador Dali who were able to conceptualize and evoke designs in ways the world had never experienced or observed. Princess Windisch-Graetz used to buy most of her clothes in Paris and was one of Hungary's most fashionable women; she was also one of Gilberts most notable royal clientele. She was a lady with exceptional taste and very "avant-garde" before her time. Her sense for beauty and elegance was all satisfied by Alberts highly unusual designs. Gilbert Albert revelled in using unusual and unexpected materials such as fossils, minerals and scarab shells which he incorporated into designs for necklaces, bracelets and rings. He was the first designer to set meteorites into fine jewellery as well as the striking fulgurites which are created when lightening strikes the desert and turns the sand into tubular or branching glass forms. He incorporated revolutionary designs in his pieces, using asymmetrical triangles & rhombic form shapes in ways nobody ever envisioned a timepiece to look and the result was simple, sophisticated, and purely artistic designs. He contrasted the roughly hued nature of these raw materials with either highly polished or heavily textured gold and perhaps a sprinkling of more traditional gemstones such as rubies or diamonds. He drew much inspiration from natural forms, shapes and textures which influenced his designs and choice of materials from the classic to the innovative and avant-garde. Gilbert Albert took his place among the great jewelers who revolutionized the history of Fine Jewelry through his boundless imagination and his innovative capacities which gravitated from his inspirations from the forms and materials found in nature. After being selected as Patek Philippe’s chief designer for a short time due to how unique his concepts were, he eventually opened his own Maison after 1962 where he became known for the use of unusual materials like coral and meteorite with Yellow Gold, all installed in quirky, unique jewelry that became very desirable At first, Gilbert Albert started working as a case designer for Patek Philippe during the 1950s at the age of 24. He began using his favorite artists Brancusi, a modernist sculptor, and Mondrian, a non-representational painter as inspirations in his designs. Albert defied the conventional way of designing watchcases as the world knew it and as a result Albert was asked to commission a few select production lines for the watch firms Omega and Patek Philippe. In the 1960s, Patek Philippe worked with the World Renown Geneva jewelry designer to design a series of wrist and pocket watches as well as jewelry with innovative cases & designs for a very limited time. Albert was a keen painter and also a sculptor which is apparent in the bold three dimensional forms of his creations. His original design sketches are beautiful artworks in themselves and his creativity and attention to detail are reflected in the meticulous craftsmanship that he insisted on for his jewels. Many of Albert’s innovative designs for Patek Philippe & other Swiss watchmakers remained prototypes and were never manufactured in series because of the uncertain commercial success of his daring design which is why his very limited production examples are so highly sought after today
