Edwardian 6.80 Carat Natural Ceylon Sapphire Diamond Ring

About the Item

An exquisite sapphire ring from the Edwardian (ca1910s) era! Made of 18kt yellow gold, the ring holds a stunning natural, no heat sapphire at the center, framed by sparkling diamonds on all four sides. The Ceylon (Sri Lankan) sapphire weighs 6.80ct, and is beautifully faceted and oval in shape. It exhibits a luscious cornflower blue color, which is natural and displays no indications of heat treatment. The sapphire is prong set in yellow gold and accented by eight old Mine Cut diamonds which are set, creating a unique design. Three diamonds are set on each shoulder of the mounting while two additional stones are set at the top and bottom of the sapphire. All of the diamonds are set within platinum prongs and have an overall diamond weight of 0.54ctw. A smooth yellow gold band completes the design and there are two visible French hallmarks stamped along the outside including an owl (indicating its import into France, but meeting minimum 18kt gold French standards) and a mask (representing the use of platinum, either French or imported origin). A spectacular antique ring, it would look exquisite worn on special occasions, or could make an extraordinary gemstone engagement ring! The ring has a finger size 6, but could easily be resized if desired. The sapphire rests approximately 1/4" above the finger when worn. The clustered sapphire and diamond centerpiece measures slightly less than 5/8" wide and 3/4" tall. The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold and platinum setting and the sapphire stone and all of the accent diamonds are securely set. Although the color and clarity of the sapphire is exceptional, there is a naturally occurring feathered inclusion which can be seen in the table of the ring. The inclusion is hardly noticeable when the ring is worn and does not detract from the beauty of the piece.
