Gold Ring with Micromosaic 'Vatican Studio 19th Century' with Cestius Pyramid

About the Item

In this 18 Kt gold ring is mounted a micromosaic from the Vatican Studio of the mosaic ( mid-nineteenth century ) depicting the Pyramid of Cestius. The Pyramid of Cestius is an ancient pyramid in Rome, Italy, near the Porta San Paolo and the Protestant Cemetery. It was built as a tomb for Gaius Cestius, a member of the Epulones religious corporation.] It stands at a fork between two ancient roads, the Via Ostiensis and another road that ran west to the Tiber along the approximate line of the modern Via Marmorata. Due to its incorporation into the city's fortifications, it is today one of the best-preserved ancient buildings in Rome. The pyramid was built about 18–12 BC as a tomb for Gaius Cestius, a magistrate and member of one of the four great religious corporations in Rome, the Septemviri Epulonum. It is of brick-faced concrete covered with slabs of white marble standing on a travertine foundation. Serra micromosaics come from the "Studio Vaticano del Mosaico", that started up in Rome, 1727. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Italy became a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims alike, with the former flocking here to admire the Vatican and the splendors of Rome and latter attracted by our cultural heritage and artistic innovation. This trip was known as "Grand Tour" and for most Grand Tour travellers, Rome was the last stop of the journey. Rome's squares and monuments have been immortalized by numerous artists such as the micromosaicists: besides objects of classical inspiration, were created reproduction of sights, common-life, animals and flowers. These works astounded and fascinated travellers due to the precision of design, color tones and harmony of the composition. The micromosaics were mounted in gold or silver in order to transform simple plaquettes into necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings and pendants. The travellers bought a remembrance in micromosaics that reproduced a scene profoundly soaked in classical spirit. Finger size : 8
