This sleek, handsome 14k yellow gold mid-century ring features a glowing, honey-colored chrysoberyl cat's-eye of approximately 2 carats, bezel-set in 14k white gold and flanked on either side—also set into white gold—by a pair of clean, bright-white baguette diamonds that together total half-a-carat. This is a so-called gypsy setting, probably my favorite setting for a stone because it's so smooth and nothing catches on your pockets or clothing. This style of ring is also perfect for people who normally don't wear gemstone rings—nurses and doctors, for example—because they have to wear gloves. Chrysoberyl cat's-eye (not to be confused with "tiger's eye," which is a form of quartz) is a rare, precious gemstone found in a few locations around the world including Sri Lanka. Like a star sapphire, chrysoberyl cat's-eye displays chatoyancy but instead of having six (or twelve) rays it has a single line that slides through the body of the stone as light strikes it from the proper angle. The ideal color is called "milk and honey" which refers to the honey-colored background of the gem and the milk-white "line" that passes through it.
