Imperial Jade Ring in Regal Coronet Setting

About the Item

This regal, English-crafted circa 1940s 14k rose gold ring holds within its fleur-de-lis coronet prong setting a magnificent -if petite (8 mm x 10 mm)- natural and untreated Burmese jade of the omphacite variety. This rare, exotic gem is evenly saturated, translucent, "imperial" green with a high-gloss polish. It's an utterly exquisite and exceedingly rare gem appropriately set in this rather grand and quite dignified setting. The rich old 14k rose gold is the perfect color compliment to the deep gemmy green of the jade. What is omphacite jade? Well, as our gemological technology has improved we are able to detect differences in rocks and minerals that eluded us before. Many fine examples of "imperial jade" that tested as jadeite under standard laboratory equipment have subsequently tested as omphacite which, like nephrite, is another variety of jade. This is exactly such a ring. Previously GIA certified as natural and untreated Jadeite from Burma, new sophisticated testing from Stone Group Labs (SGL) has identified the stone as omphacite. What does this mean? Well, to a normal person it means absolutely nothing. It's still jade, it's still natural and untreated and it still glows like the finest emerald. But to jade collectors, this is a bit of a WOW! Jade of this old-mine quality is becoming ever more scarce. What I love about this ring is the triumphant way it celebrates—honors—the jadeite. Every design flourish, each line, all the curves and of course the ornate prongs themselves all exist to showcase the jade. No need for neon signs (like diamonds) here. This is an exceptional jade cabochon and the setting acknowledges that. The respect and awe the jeweler had for this gem is apparent in this ring's construction. And maybe that's my favorite thing about it. Some jewelry speaks. To try this ring on is to never let it off your finger. When you glance down, the fineness of the stone is shocking every time. This is one of my favorite rings. A beautiful, original design holding the finest example of my favorite gem. If diamonds aren't your best friend, this would make an excellent diamond-alternative engagement ring. If you're a jade collector like I am, you know exactly how important and rare this little ring is. The ring is currently a size 5.75 and appears not to have undergone a previous resizing though it certainly could be. Care should be taken, however, to preserve all the hallmarks, which are intact.

Wear consistent with age and use. The jadeite jade is natural and untreated. The ring is in very good condition with light scratches to the gold appropriate to its age. No damage or repairs.
