Victorian Japanese is Shakudo Ringed

$2,500

About

A stunner of a silver ring, c. 1870, in the historic Japanese art form of Shakudo originated in the Samurai period in Japan by esteemed artists who made ornaments to adorn swords and armor. When the Samurai period ended, these artists moved to making wearable art. Here a comfortable, oval in mixed metal with gold and silver, depicts the a subject so close to the minds of Japanese artists. Flowers dance high and low are in contrast with the plain shakudo blue black diagonal at center. Notice the grace of the proportion of the delicate blooms and leaves and the Japanese esthetic of asymmetry. Much of Japanese art depicts the connection of humanity to nature. A language of flowers (Hanakotoba) existed that is little known today. Flowers were national symbols that had meaning including loyalty, eternal love, romance, shyness, piety, and gratitude. The oval of mixed metal art (shakudo) in this ring was called a kashira, a decorative element once set into the very top of a sword handle. Currently size 7 1/4 and can be sized. The ring is in excellent condition. c 1870. Origin Japan.
