Victorian Tourmaline Halo Ring with Diamonds

About

Sixteen rose-cut diamonds encircle a deep, glittering and complex tourmaline just over 2 carats in size that is simultaneously emerald and forest green. That's one thing I love about tourmaline: it's a pleochroic gemstone, meaning it displays different colors when viewed from different angles. In this case, when you look at the stone face-on, directly into the top facet (or table) of the stone, it appears a forest green. But tilt your hand and look at the gem again and now it's become a Columbian emerald, or in bright light, it displays a green as sharp as a tsavorite. I am drawn to gemstones that "do" things. I love chrysoberyl cat's eye for the chatoyancy and star sapphires for their asterism; I love jade because it changes with the light and shadows and opal because it seems like something imagined, not something real. This tourmaline halo ring shares something special with those gems: it's not just one gem. It's many gems, inside the body of one. Entirely hand-fabricated in the late Victorian era and yet utterly modern, this rare and beautiful ring would make a stunning right-hand fashion ring. But it could also be a diamond-alternative engagement ring that still has some diamond presence. The ring bears no hallmarks or maker's mark though I believe it to be of American origin. It tests as 18k yellow gold and I would place its birthdate somewhere circa 1900. It has been very well cared for and shows little evidence of wear. Currently a size 8.5, this ring could be resized by your local jeweler. Note: Tourmaline is an inherently durable gemstone, which is why it has always been popular in rings. However, it's not uncommon to see tiny abrasions along facet junctions or soft scratches. This stone is in exceptionally unblemished condition. It must, therefore, be acknowledged that the tourmaline may be a later replacement. However, under microscopic examination, I see no evidence at all that the stone was changed. The proportions are such that the gem fits too perfectly to not be original, which is my conclusion. Some people simply treasure their jewels and these are the ones I seek out.
