Medieval Stirrup Ring
About the Item
One of two main types of Gothic rings, the stirrup ring is named because it looks like a horse’s stirrup. Typically reserved for bishops, the type originates in the twelfth century, perhaps to emulate the Gothic arches of Cathedrals. The high bezel, floral engraving, and opening at the rear of the present ring are unusual. The sapphire is the most common stone used in stirrup rings, the color evoking the celestial heavens and the robe of the Virgin Mary. A medieval lapidary describes the divine sapphire as possessing the “highest powers.” Once the form of the stirrup ring developed in the twelfth century, there was little evolution of the type.
