Renaissance Gemstone Ring
About the Item
This elegant ring is typical of the Renaissance, with its elaborate design that combines a gemstone in a high bezel, decorative elements at the shoulders and colourful enamels. Such rings appear on 16th century pattern books by Virgil Solis, Etienne Delaune, and Pierre Woeriot, which circulated widely. Quatrefoil bezels were the most characteristic settings for gems at the time but the type of box bezel set high as seen here, was almost as popular. Emphasized shoulders, ornate with bright enamels that enhanced the beauty of the stone and the lustre of gold, complemented these elaborate settings. During the Renaissance, the ring developed into a miniature work of art, combining the skills of the chaser, engraver and enameller as well as the stonecutter. The ring is enameled in a ?blackwork? pattern. This type of enameling, which appeared around 1585 and remained in fashion until 1620, consist of broken scrolls and curvilinear motifs set against a background of black enamel.
