Georgian Hardstone Intaglio Ring Depicting Pan

About the Item

A Georgian hardstone intaglio ring, the oval cornelian measuring 15x11mm, depicting the figure of Pan, rubover set within a yellow gold mount with banded detail to the ridge, to a tapered yellow gold shank, circa 1800, finger size V, gross weight 14.2 grams. In ancient Greek mythology Pan was the god of the wild, shepherds and flocks, rustic music and companion of the nymphs. He was also recognized as the god of fields, groves, wooded glens and often affiliated with fertility and the season of spring. The ancient Greeks also considered Pan to be the god of theatrical criticism. This ring is in very good condition. Unmarked, tested as 22ct gold. A handsome Georgian ring. The bright yellow gold pairs perfectly with the carved red carnelian stone, which depicts a delicate image of the Greek mythological figure Pan. Intaglio and cameo rings and other forms of jewellery become very popular in around 1800, when Napoleon began avidly collecting antique intaglios. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, gentlemen began taking the ‘grand tour’ of the ancient world, travelling to Greece and Italy. Many of these gentlemen collected intaglios on their travels. This ring follows in the neoclassical, early nineteenth century tradition of Ancient Greek and Roman motifs.
