Men's Rose-Cut Diamond Ring Tudor Style, 1940s, European

About the Item

Featuring deeply hand-carved shoulders with a distinctly Jacobian sensibility, this substantial diamond ring is an extraordinary work of goldsmithing art. Originally created for a man, the ring could today of course be worn by anyone. The Tudor and Jacobian periods spanned from 1485 to 1685 and jewelry from these periods was not dissimilar; both utilized intricate designs that were deeply carved into the metal for maximum three-dimensional impact. This ring may not be six hundred years old, many of its design elements certainly are. Dating from around the 1940s, this extremely well-crafted ring pays homage to a rich, candle-dripping, velvet-hanging, stone castle past. On the face of this impeccably detailed ring is a beveled square plaque of cross-hatched 18k white gold into which is set a brilliant rose-cut diamond approximately 4.5 mm in diameter and weighing between ¼ and ½ of a carat. The large facets produce wide flashes of color: blue, purple, red, yellow, orange. The diamond rests in the center of radiating engraved sun rays, which makes the already impressive diamond all the more so. The 18k yellow gold is so unusually golden-yellow it's as if the ring has absorbed the warm light from countless candles. The interior of the band is marked "750" for 18K gold but there is no maker's mark nor is there any evidence that the ring has been resized so the country of origin, as well as the creator, remains a mystery. It looks French. It's currently a size 11 and could be resized by your local jeweler. It weighs 10.39 grams.
