Rare Omphacite Jade Ring

About the Item

You've heard of Jadeite jade. You've heard of nephrite jade. Have you heard of Omphacite jade? Probably not. As the technology we use in gemology advances, so too does our knowledge. Many of the fine imperial jade pieces long believed (and GIA certified) to be the jadeite variety of jade have since been re-tested and shown to in fact be Omphacite. Why do you care? Well, if you merely love natural, untreated fine jade jewelry you don't care because nothing has changed. But if you are a borderline insane jade collector (hand raised) you care *enormously* because this is just so . . . cool Speaking of cool: let us now discuss this aerodynamically designed certified natural and untreated omphacite jade ring bezel-set in gleaming 14k rose gold. When the ring is off your finger and backlit, you can see the lovely natural grain texture of the jade, as in the first photograph. But once you put the ring on your finger or turn it slightly off-center, the grain seems to vanish and what remains is a richly saturated, evenly toned stone of beautiful translucency and a polish so high the stone looks wet. All the lines of this ring are smooth and even the 15.5 mm x 10.6 mm jade cabochon is bezel-set nearly flush with the surface of the gold mounting as you can see in the profile images. I've worn this ring on a book tour in front of thousands of people (how's that for humility?) so it has it is quite accustomed to lavish praise. One of the reasons why I chose to wear this ring on a book tour is that it is so smooth, it never gets caught when you slide your hand in the pocket of your jeans. I *will* make behavioral accommodations for a piece of jewelry —ugh— but it's annoying and I'd rather not, you know? Ever since the GIA realized omphacite was a thing there has been a mad rush to collect jade rings which have been certified as omphacite jade. Two of my finest imperial jade rings turned out to be omphacite jade. I would love them to test the Barbara Hutton necklace, right? How much imperial jade is really imperial omphacite jade? Hmmm. This is a rare opportunity to snag yourself one of the most sought-after jade rings. Currently a size 9, this ring could be resized by your local jeweler. Inside the band is a 14K stamp and an "X" maker's mark which I am unable to identify. This is a very high-quality ring looks and feels like a classic English men's signet ring but it can't be English. Although maybe an English jeweler made it here in America. I realzie this conjecture might sound a little but, what? But when you see the ring in person, you'll know exacrtly what I mean. We don't make rounded-edge gent's rings in America; the British do.
