Tiger's Eye Ring from Italy is Definitive 1970s Gent’s Ring

About

Tiger's eye rings were the ubiquitous "gent's ring" throughout the 1960s and 1970s. As a jewelry-obsessed child of this era, I was deeply attracted to tiger's eye but it's very commonness distressed me. I could buy a "Made in Mexico" tiger's eye ring in silver at Faces of Earth in Amherst behind the Exxon station without even having to save my allowance for very long. So I never bought one. I thought the golden stone was absolutely beautiful but I forced myself to hate it because I was a snobby and pretentious child, which I supposed I cultivated in response to being raised by wolves. This is the first—and remains the only—tiger's eye ring I have ever owned. And it is anything but common. This utterly spectacular architectural ring was created in Italy from 18k yellow gold at some point during the 1970s; I would even go so far as to speculate a construction year of 1975, a date that corresponds with the Italian architecture this resembles. I am literally at a loss for words to describe the coolness of this ring. I feel certain Paul Newman would have snatched it right up had he seen it. He wore a ruby ring in The Towering Inferno and that same ring shows up in an interview he gave on Johnny Carson, so we know he liked mid-century rings. And I this one, well, just look at it. Look at the lines, the oval-diamond cut-outs on each shoulder, which graduate in size and look like sonic waves or pulses from a neutron star. The square plate of tiger's eye—which is a variety of quartz—is the most beautiful piece of this stone I have ever seen in my life. (That sounds superlative but it's true.) It's got such radiance and depth. And it's perfectly cut. Not one chip, nick or scratch anywhere on this ring. That's the miracle of this piece: the most iconic tiger's eye ring, possibly in existence—and it's in mint condition. I think for a young man, especially, one with a cool job in technology or graphic design or some industry where presentation matters, this would be the ultimate in cool. I also think a woman could rock this ring
