Its name is believed to have been derived from the Tamil and Sinhalese words “Turmali” or “Thoramalli” which translates to “stone with various colours.” It is the presence of a complex mixture of elements such as calcium, manganese and iron that is primarily responsible for the gem’s colour. Size and translucence drive the rarity of these exceptional mint green stones.
