The body color of this huge Ethiopian opal is sort of a pastel orange, but green, yellow and red flashes abound. The entire effect changes in every lighting situation. Even in indirect natural light, when some orange opals tend to look soupy, this stone takes on a gorgeous moire sheen. Eytan Brandes bezel-set the stone in a heavy, bold solitaire -- over twenty grams of rich, unmistakable 18 karat gold -- with a beautiful satin finish. This ring, probably made in the 1960's or earlier, came to us set with a big blue topaz and an 18 karat yellow gold overlay. Eytan Brandes polished off all the yellow (tiresome!) except on the inside, where time and abrasion will do the job. Then he replaced the blue topaz with an absolutely beautiful, very large (almost 16mm!) and very clean, near-round black Tahitian pearl. This pearl is from George Hajjar of Seven Seas Pearls in downtown Los Angeles. Many of our customers bring us their old jewelry to be melted down so that we can apply the scrap gold credit to the price of their new custom pieces by Eytan Brandes. During this process, Eytan plucks out the precious stones and sorts them according to a system nobody but he understands. This ring was fashioned by Eytan specifically to use up his pile of extracted yellow diamonds, all taken from various pre-owned pieces over a period of around 25 years. They're in various shades ranging from pale yellow to fancy yellow to golden yellow-brown. (And there's two small champagne-colored diamonds thrown in the mix, just to keep everyone on their toes.) This is a mish-mash of round stones -- all different sizes, colors and clarities. Most are full (i.e., brilliant) cut, but a few are mixed cuts.
