GIA Certified Natural Clam Pearl Ring
About the Item
Recently mounted into a retro-era (early 1950s) 14K white gold and diamond ring is a fascinating and rare pearl you probably didn't know even existed: a natural saltwater clam pearl. Most people think only oysters produce pearls but any mollusk can create a pearl though some do so with such infrequency that they not commonly seen in jewelry. Clam pearls are often strange shapes; round or near-round pearls such as this are quite rare.
The GIA-certified pearl you see in this beautiful ring is a 2.12 carat 6.66x6.50mm drop-shaped pearl -though it appears perfectly round in the setting. The pearl is natural -meaning, uncultured- and has undergone no treatments.
The white pearl displays a subtle but thrilling flame-effect on the surface. This is such a unique pearl ring, but you really have to do a doubletake top realize just how special it is.
The two tiny full-cut diamonds add just a little spark of fire. The hand-fabricated mounting is quite simple, showcasing the pearl and not distracting from it with detaulks. However, there are two lovely details worth noting: four slender, softly engraved "leaves" supporting the prongs. The band is marked for 14K gold but has no maker's mark. This ring originally held beautiful natural and uncultured saltwater oyster pearl that had sustained damage. Though I am confident it was created in the middle of the previous century, I think it looks quite Art Nouveau.
