Snake Ring Antique European

About the Item

Much old jewelry becomes old jewelry of interest to nobody. Snake rings are one exception; they are more popiolar now than when they were first created. This luxuriousn18K yellow gold antique ring was entirely hand-crafted in the late 19th century. The buttery golden serpent coils around, around, and around itself, finally resting its head upon its tail. A sparkling old rose-cut diamond is set within the bead of the snake. Interior marks are too worn to decipher; an exterior mark implies France. Equally suitable for a man or a woman, this is a sleek and stylish incarnation of this timeless classic. The proportions are just right and the positioning of the snake's head and tail seem just exactly right. The diamond is a pear-shape which is a nice touch that mirrors the shape of the head. A very well-thought-out piece that was executed with skill and panache over a century ago. Currently a size 8 1/2, this ring could be resized by your local jeweler.

Spectacular and rare: this 19th-century snake ring was created by hand-pulled gold wire which was pounded flat, coiled, fused and engraved with rich detailing. A small diamond set inside a chunky silver bezel forms the crown of the snake. This thin ring (.98mm) is so meticulously detailed and extraordinarily fine. I'm dating it as an early Victorian piece -circa 1850- but it may well be an older Georgian ring. Remarkably, the ring is not dented, torn, or damaged in any way. In fact, the ring has never been resized. It was created as a size 13 ring...
