About the Item

I just bought this fabulous 19th century Royal crest Boulle chest loaded with pristine vanity items last month in Paris. It's so rare to find a set with crown monograms or crest, and all the more so one that is complete and undamaged. This one is truly the finest I've ever seen or owned, and just look at the incredible array of items within. Not only are they all original, they're truly pristine. And look there to the back, all the gentleman's ease in travel has been considered. There are two superb decanters for spirits and a smaller one for liqueur which is still within its leather cup that slips into the vermeil on sterling drinking tumbler or timbale. There is a clamping top box for keeping his tobacco (or tea) moist and fresh. There is a magnificent shaving brush. All in addition to the more usual pieces of jars and boxes in the set. The lift out tray and the box's interior are all excellent and a mirror in the lid hides a documents pouch for correspondence or a place to store pound notes which were the usual money in their day. This is an English sterling silver set, by the way. The outer chest is made in the manner of the French boulle work, inlaid with finely cut brass that lies flush and firmly into the wood of the box. The surprise when I opened the chest - well, of course it had to become mine - or Antiques & Uncommon Treasure's inventory for you, I should say. No finer ever seen. The silversmith's workmanship is opulent and elegant and all pieces are just perfect. No dents. Nothing to diminish your enjoyment or the value of this stunning set. We have hints to work from in finding out for whom it was originally made, in that we have a crest that might well be Germanic, Austrian, with the crown top and as well on each of the vermeil/silver pieces, lids, we have the crown and monogram A. S.. This is not the crown of a marquis, by the way, but a Royal crown. You historians out there, let me know if you can put a Royal to our A S monogram dating 1867, from the British silver hallmarks. Oddly enough, though, I wasn't able to find the silversmith whose mark is AD in rectangle. Anyone have that reference for us, please email. Thank you. Excellent condition throughout. No breaks in glass. No dents in silver. Even all the 18k gold layer (vermeil) is fully intact without any silver showing through. The chest is also excellent. No lifted brass inlays, they're all just as they were when made. No dents no dings. The handles on sides recess to flat. There are no chips to the wood. The interior of the box is in beautiful form, condition. I suspect the mirror has been replaced. The original key still is in the lock and it works perfectly. Me? I'd display it open all the time anyway. Exquisite set made for a King or Prince. Monogram is A.P.
