Auguste Berthoud. A Rare Antique Experimental Marine Chronometer C1840

About the Item

Auguste Berthoud. A Unique and Rare French Experimental Marine Chronometer C1840 Dial: The Original Silvered regulator Dial, similar to that used by Louis Berthoud, his father, with small Roman chapter ring for hours, subsidiary seconds below, outer Arabic minute ring on the border of the bezel and original Blued steel Breguet hands. The dial is fully signed Auguste Berthoud and numbered. Case: The original Double body two tier mahogany box with slide on the lid over the observation aperture. Brass gimbals with a ladded bowl. Brass case "En Forme de Tabatiere " , similar to that used by Louis Berthoud for his later chronometer. Movement: The Brass, full plate movement with steel conical pillars secured by nuts with washers. Fusee with chain, maintaining power, Spring Detent Escapement, three-arm compensation balance, with three trapezoidal weights and timing screws and blued steel helical balance spring. The piece is rare as most French Marine chronometers were fitted with Pivoted Detente Escapements. A Brief Biography. Charles-Auguste Berthoud (1798-1876) Was born in Argenteuil on November 17, 1798. He was one of the youngest pupils at the Ecole d'Arts-et-Metiers of Compiegne, which was transferred to Chalons-sur-Marne in 1806. Together with his elder brother, Louis Simon Henri Berthoud, Charles-Auguste was taught the art of precision watchmaking by his father, Pierre-Louis Berthoud; when the latter died at the end 1813, it was his foreman, Jean-Francois Henri Motel, who continued to teach the boys. Having finished his apprenticeship, Charles-Auguste Berthoud became in charge of his late father's workshop in Argenteuil, while his brother managed the shop in Paris. The work of the two Berthoud boys was already highly praised at the Exposition des L'indusirle Francaise in 1819, and they were awarded a silver medal at the exhibitions of 1823 and 1827. No longer in partnership with his brother, Charles-Auguste was then awarded a gold medal at the 1834 exhibition and, in 1839, was appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Trade to succeed to Perrelet as the head of a school of precision watchmaking. At the 1844 exhibition, he was commended for his teachings at the school and received a confirmation of his gold medal, which he received again at the 1849 exhibition when he was also named Chevalier de la Legion d' Honneur. Charles-Auguste Berthoud was a sober man who enjoyed a quiet family life. During his working career, he produced some 350 marine chronometers and a few pocket chronometers. Unfortunately, sorrow for the death of loved ones was to fill his later years and he died on February 15, 1876. This marine chronometer is an exceptional piece of history and would compliment any collection.

  • Rare Antique Pocket Key Watch French 1800s with Painted Enamel Dial
    Located in London, GB
Rare Antique Pocket Key Watch French 1800s with Painted Enamel Dial in Working Order An exceptional example of French craftwork estimated from the mid-1800s with delicate enamel painting on the dial and bespoke Roman numerals. Pocket watches have long been a token of style and refinement, even in today’s modern era. During the mid-1800s, this would have been a status symbol as manufacturing had increased so that it was more widely available. Everyone from businessmen to international travelers would have relied on a precise pocket watch to measure the train schedules, daily paper, and end of the work day. In this case, the unique painted enamel on the dial and custom Roman numerals would mean a man of means owned this watch. Instead of relying on a more standard manufactured piece, this would have been hand-finished, demonstrating more wealth. What makes this particular timepiece so rare is the polychrome decoration of a city on the water. When you look closely at the dial, you’ll find detailed decorations of a cartouche and flora motifs perfectly offsetting the silver casement. Both of the keys are attached to a metal chain, and the appearance of the monogrammed FB is evident on the cover metal. A French inscription on the interior reads: “Echappement a Cylindre Aiguilles Quatre Rubiz.” The keys refer to the critical winding and lock set for maintaining the watch. You can also see the makers mark numbered 9356 11509. ------------------------------ Condition Report: In worker order and high quality, considering it is an antique pocket watch. There are minor age-related marks on the silver casement and some fading that will be cleaned and polished before shipping. No damage to the enamel or hands. We service all pocket watches...
