Victorian French Diamond Enameled Cherub Gold Pocket Watch

About the Item

A gorgeous and unusual French pocket watch from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in 18kt yellow gold, this piece is decorated with an amusing cherub motif on one side, and a glass covered watch face on the other. The image depicts a charming cherub "pushing" a sparkling Rose Cut diamond up a diagonal row of delicate Rose Cut accent diamonds. The cherub is decorated with colorful enamel, including rosy-colored cheeks, blue wings, and a red scarf at its waist. The opposite side of the piece reveals a glass-covered watch face, showcasing black Roman numerals, gold watch dials, and a pastel-colored floral design encircling the perimeter and gracing the center. The self-winding watch is round with faceted edges, creating a fabulous eye-catching appeal. A complimentary shaped handle rests at the top, which also functions as the winder, and is perfect for attaching to a gold chain. When opened from the top, the interior reveals several markings, including a maker's mark and the number "29405." Additionally, there is a French touch mark of a boar's head stamped below the winder. This magnificent pocket watch is an antique treasure showcasing two equally beautiful sides, allowing the wearer to choose which one to display as the front. The timepiece would look lovely paired with a complimentary watch chain, and is a must for the antique watch collector! The pocket watch measures 1 5/8" tall (including the handle), is a little more than 1" wide, and is approximately 1/4" thick. The overall condition of the watch is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the watch face and movement, which keeps time and remains in good working condition. All of the diamonds are intact and securely set. The enamel is free of any chips or scratches. Watches of this era should be cleaned and oiled periodically to keep them in good working order but currently, the piece is in good working condition.
