Old Northumberland House, London, c. 1770
Located in Stoke, Hampshire
Herbert Pugh (Ireland Fl. 1758-1788 London) Old Northumberland House, c. 1770 Oil on panel 20 x 30 in (50.8 x 76.2 cm) Provenance An important private collection Born in Ireland he went to England about 1758, and in 1765 when he was living in the Great Piazza, Covent Garden, he obtained a premium of twenty-five guineas from the Society of Arts for a landscape in oil. He was a Member of the Society of Artists and contributed forty-five works to its exhibitions between 1760 and 1776, nearly all landscapes and topographical views, but including 'The Italian and British Quack Doctors', 'The Amorous old Beau' and 'The Procuress'. These were probably of the same nature as two of three pictures done by him in imitation of Hogarth which, says Edwards (Anecdotes of Painting) "are nothing but mere representations of vulgar debauchery". In 1777 he had two works exhibited at 'The Exhibition or Grand Museum of Arts and Sciences at the Great Room, Royal Exchange, Strand. Pugh's intemperate habits hastened his death which took place shortly after 1788. There is a large landscape by him in the Lock Hospital, London and two views of London Bridge were exhibited in the Grosvenor Gallery...

The Hunt Breaking cover
By Samuel Alken Jnr.
Located in Stoke, Hampshire
Samuel Alken Jnr (1784-1825) The Hunt Breaking cover Signed 'S. Alken.' lower right Oil on canvas Canvas size - 24 x 36 in Framed size - 31 x 42 1/2 in Samuel Alken junior was the eldest son of Sporting artist Samuel Alken (1756-1815), he was born on April 10th. The family mostly became sporting artists, his younger brothers Henry Thomas (Ben Tally Ho), George and Sefferien. Little is known about his life, in his father's will he was the only son mentioned, but this was to leave him 1s., which presumably was a derogatory legacy perhaps because, as Shaw Sparrow suggests, he traded on his father's name, signing in the same manner. However, as he often signed quite clearly S. Alken Jnr one feels it unlikely, but it does imply S. Alken Snr also painted sporting pictures. There has always been great confusion over the Samuel Alkens and for a long time they were looked upon as one person. number of prints were published after Samuel Junior's work including a set of sixteen published in the early 1820's depicting various sports, including hunting, racing, shooting and fishing. In the works recorded by him, his style would seem closer to that of Barenger. A lot of small wooded shooting scenes...

By Hancocks

An elegant step cut diamond ring by Hancocks, set to the centre with a beautiful old cut Asscher diamond weighing 5.14cts and of H colour and VS2 clarity in corner claws to a simple double bar gallery between shoulders set each side with three bullet cut diamonds forming a stylised honeycomb pattern, all in a finely hand-crafted platinum mount with knife edge band. Maker Hancocks Period Contemporary Origin London Gemstones 5.14ct H VS2 old cut Asscher diamond with GIA certificate 6 x bullet cut diamonds weighing 0.23cts in total Setting Platinum with maker's mark and London assay marks Weight 4.6 grams Dimensions UK finger size M 1/2, US size 6.5 Can be made any size Condition New Directors Notes The Asscher cut was designed by Joseph Asscher in 1902 in an attempt to best utilise the natural shape of octahedral diamond crystals. The cut is essentially a square shape with the corners cut off quite steeply creating an almost octagonal outline to the stone. The facets are carefully arranged in three rows of straight, step-like faces to the top and bottom of the stone which has a wonderfully elegant and clean appearance with a more subtle sparkle than cuts such as the round brilliant. It became increasingly popular during the early 20th Century, particularly in the Art Deco period when the straight edges and angles of the cut suited the aesthetic perfectly. The Asscher family have been diamond dealers since the mid 19th Century and are probably best known as the company entrusted with the cleaving and cutting of the world famous Cullinan diamond.
