Very rare 19th century Nantucket Lightship Bushel Basket by George C. Gardner of Nantucket Island (1809 - 1889), an oversized round open basket handcrafted with a fat rattan weave on wide wooden splint staves, a carved wooden heart-shaped handle which is deeply notched above and below the rim and extends under the weave a full half-way down their staves, and a round pine bottom deeply inscribed "George C. Gardner." Captain Gardner lived at 141 Main Street and was also known for making shorebird decoys.

The bottoms are made from pine and each are stenciled with the maker's mark, "R Folger Maker Nantucket Mass." Nantucket Basket with Half Hull Model of a Sloop on Lid, by Harry Hilbert, 1995, a Nantucket purse having a solid mahogany hinged top surmounted with a finely carved and laminated half hull model of a sloop built in "lifts", fine brass hinges minutely inlaid, and walnut cross-band and satinwood line inlay around perimeter; braided leather shoulder strap attached with bone mounts; nickel clasp; woven cane wrap on oak staves; signed and dated by wood-burnt stamp on the mahogany bottom. This is a beautiful basket made with astounding craftsmanship by one of the finest artists in the field.
The basket remains in superb, barely used condition.
